After the trip: turning your favourite travel photo into a jigsaw for the person you went with

Written by the Puzzlify team. Puzzlify is our product, so weigh this accordingly; we've also listed other ideas at the end that have nothing to do with us.

You come home from a trip with a phone full of photos, and within a week they're buried under screenshots and receipts. One small way to bring a trip back to life for the person you went with (a partner, a friend, a sibling, the parent who finally came along) is to turn your favourite photo from it into a jigsaw they solve on their phone or laptop. It takes a few minutes to make and it lands nicely a week or a month after you're back, when the trip is starting to feel far away.

Here's how to do it well.

Pick the right photo

Not every great travel photo makes a fun puzzle. What works best:

  • Lots of detail and colour. A busy market, a harbour full of boats, a street with signs and shopfronts, a beach with towels and umbrellas. Big areas of plain sky, sea or snow are hard (and a little tedious) to solve.
  • Both of you in it, if you have one. A slightly blurry selfie in front of the view often means more than the perfect landscape shot.
  • A moment, not just a place. The terrible ferry, the café where it rained all afternoon, the dinner where you got lost on the way. The photo that makes them say "oh, that day" is the one.
  • Full resolution. Use the original from your camera roll, not a version that went through a messaging app and got compressed. Puzzlify takes a JPG.

Choose a piece count

How long you want it to take matters more than how "hard" it sounds:

Pieces Roughly Good for
24 3–5 minutes A quick smile on a phone, or a child who came on the trip
48 8–12 minutes A coffee-break solve
80 15–25 minutes The sweet spot for most people
130 30–45 minutes A relaxed evening on a laptop
252 an hour or more Jigsaw people, on a big screen

If you're not sure, go with 80. Phones are fine up to about 130; past that a tablet or laptop is nicer.

Write the end note

When the last piece clicks in, a short message appears. This is where the gift really happens, so don't skip it. A few that work:

  • "Same time next year? I've already started looking at flights."
  • "Still not over that sunset. Thank you for saying yes to this trip."
  • "You were right about the ferry. I'll never admit it again."
  • "Happy anniversary. Lisbon was the best idea we've had."

Keep it to two or three lines. Inside jokes beat speeches.

Send it at the right moment

A few timing ideas that have worked well:

  • A month after you're back, when the post-holiday glow has worn off.
  • On the anniversary of the trip, or of the day you booked it.
  • Tucked into a printed photo or a postcard from the place, with the link written on it or as a QR code.
  • As a little race: if you travelled as a group, turn on the leaderboard and send the same link to everyone. Add an optional PIN if the photo is personal.

What it costs, and what it isn't

Making the puzzle and previewing it in your browser is free, so you can check the photo and piece count before paying anything. You only pay when you publish the link: €3.99 for one puzzle, €8.99 for three, or Plus at €14.99 a year for ten. The person you send it to doesn't need an account or an app; they just open the link.

To be clear about what you're getting: it's digital only. Nothing is printed or posted. If you want a physical box of pieces on the coffee table, a printed photo-puzzle service is the right choice instead. (Also, we're not puzzlify.io, the chess site, nor Puzzlit, Puzzly or Puzzify.)

If that sounds right, you can make one from your trip photo here.

Other ways to bring a trip back (no Puzzlify needed)

  • A small printed photo book of just ten photos with handwritten captions. Ten is easier to finish than two hundred.
  • A shared album both of you can add to, with one "best of" photo each per day.
  • Cook a dish from the trip together and put on the music you heard there.
  • Frame one ticket stub, map or menu next to the photo it goes with.
  • A short voice memo of your favourite moment, sent on the trip's anniversary.

Whatever you pick, the point is the same: the trip was good because you shared it, and a small reminder that you remember it too goes a long way.
